The Giving Hope to Children Society was established in 2010 by a group of Canadian friends who wanted to help children in Guatemala. On February 11th of that year, Giving Hope opened its doors to kids in need of protection in a little town called Chimaltenango, Guatemala. They created an orphanage for children in need of a safe place to stay and give them a place where they could feel supported and flourish. A year later the population of kids grew to the point where it was hard to manage. The organization decided to focus on helping all the kids in the community in the form of a community center. This space offered the children a place where the kids could get together and learn new skills like hairdressing, carpentry, music, arts & crafts, sports, etc. These programs were made possible by the Canadian volunteers who donated their money, time and energy to support these programs.

 

Today there are more than 180 kids from an assortment of neighborhoods who participate in Giving Hope activities.  The last event was the Calgary sponsored soccer championship in Guatemala. It turned out to be an amazing experience for everyone involved from the donors and volunteers to children who participated. Due to the resounding success of the soccer tournament we are hoping to make it an annual event.

 

How can you become a sponsor?

 

To sponsor a soccer team of 15 kids takes $100 Canadian dollars a month.

 

This includes: 

-Uniforms with the name and colour scheme of your choice

-Clean drinking water 

-Fees to rent the soccer field 3 times a week 

-Coaching fees

 

Objectives:

 

-To teach kids responsibility, discipline, and teamwork

-To give them a healthy and safe activity that keeps them off the streets and away from organized crime

 

Every year Giving Hope organizes trips to Guatemala for volunteering (and playing with the kiddos who love seeing the Canadian volunteers!). You are more than welcome to come :)
